Textures in Nature Lesson
Early learners explore texture through touch and observation, comparing the bark and leaves of different trees, bushes, and plants. Students use crayons and paper to create bark and leaf rubbings that reveal the patterns, shapes, textures, and structures they discover in nature. Lessons are composed of both core learning activities and flexible extensions to fit different program needs.
The Full Student Experience
What Happens Class to Class
1Texture Detectives
Students explore the meaning of texture using familiar objects and descriptive words like smooth, rough, bumpy, hard, and soft.
2Nature Rubbings
Students head outdoors and use touch and observation to compare tree bark and leaves using descriptive language. Then they create crayon rubbings that reveal textures, shapes, veins, and patterns from the natural objects they identify.
3Compare, Discover & Create
Students compare their nature rubbings and describe what they noticed in the different textures and features found across different trees, leaves, and plants. Students create spin-off artwork from their nature rubbings to take home.
