pH Testing & Art
Students explore the science of pH and why it matters for healthy plant growth. Then they test their own nutrient water to determine whether it falls within the ideal Grow Zone for their plant. Learning is extended through a color-changing art experiment, using acidic and basic household solutions to create plant-inspired artwork. Lessons are composed of both core learning activities and flexible extensions to fit different program needs.
The Full Student Experience
What Happens Class to Class
1Explore pH & Test the Grow Zone
Students learn how the pH scale describes substances as acidic, neutral, or basic and explore why maintaining an appropriate pH range matters for their plant's growth. Then students use pH test strips and color charts to measure the nutrient water in their plant jars and interpret the results.
2Paint with pH
Students test acidic and basic solutions before using their chemical reactions to create color-changing plant artwork.
