Shapes-to-Structures Challenge
Explore and build an understanding of how simple 2D shapes can come together to form 3D structures
Challenge Overview
Challenge Details
Makers challenges are designed to be flexible and can be adapted to fit a variety of schedules, age groups, and program needs, including condensed pilot formats that deliver core experiences and measurable student outcomes in as little as 1 - 2 classes.
Real-World Connections
Shapes are the building blocks of everything around us from windows to doors to bridges, buildings, and more. People use simple shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles to create strong, functional structures in 3D.
- Recognize and construct basic 2D and 3D shapes
- Transform flat shapes into standing, 3D structures
- Experiment with materials and fasteners to understand how shapes connect to form larger systems that can stand, balance, and hold their shape
- Observe cause and effect scenarios to improve designs through hands-on testing and iteration
Materials & Constraints
Materials: Wooden studs (of various sizes and shapes); Fasteners (string, rubber bands, pipe cleaner, and tape); Creative elements (chipboard, paper, markers).
Every solution is different. There is no single “right” build — only more effective solutions.
How It Works
The Makers Process for Early Learners
1Key Vocabulary & Engineering Concepts
Students build a shared language for the challenge and relevant engineering concepts by making real-world connections with their surroundings and personal experiences.
2Hands-On Skill Building
Students build confidence by practicing key skills before the main challenge. Through guided activities, they learn how to safely handle materials, apply techniques, and use relevant tools they'll need to successfully complete their project.
3Explore & Design
Students begin exploring the challenge materials and experimenting with how they connect, balance, and support weight. Working individually or in small groups, students explore different combinations of materials to understand how they impact performance.
4Guided Build & Personalization
Students use their new understanding of the materials and techniques in a guided building activity to bring their ideas to life. Once complete, they'll personalize their projects with creative enhancements.
5Show & Share
Students share their designs and the reasoning behind their decisions with the rest of the class. Building confidence through story-telling and teamwork, students celebrate each other's work.
6Play & Application
Makers learn by doing. Students use their creations in games and challenges, exploring what respectful play looks like, how their new skills can be used, and how their designs fare in the real-world.
