ELO-P & After-School DIY Builders Program Implementation
Leverage our staff to teach students
We have a proven hiring model and dozens of trained instructors who meet typical district certifications, Live Scan fingerprinting background checks, and insurance requirements to teach the DIY Builders curriculum in after-school and other ELO-P out-of-school-time programs throughout Ventura County, CA.
Professional Development for your staff
Outside of Ventura County, we can provide professional development to your staff in-person or virtually to support the implementation of a DIY Builders program for students everywhere to learn practical skills and gain confidence for lifelong success.
How it works
1
Each week, students in grades 1 - 8 will have an opportunity to participate in DIY Builders class on selected days with an instructor from our team or yours. Instructors will have project kits, assembly supplies, art supplies, and tools for up to 20 students per class.
2
Instructors are typically responsible for classroom setup, taking attendance, step-by-step assembly demonstration & instruction, project personalization planning guidance, classroom clean up, and general program supervision for meal times and dismissal.
Standards
We actively align our program with many of the quality standards for expanded learning in California to ensure students remain engaged in their DIY Builders classes and participate in hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for future success in college, career, and life.
Examples of how we align our program with these standards include the following:
-
We work with school administration and staff to ensure safety and support guidelines are developed for our instructors in advance of beginning services so that our team can intentionally work to develop relationships rooted in trust and transparency with site staff and students. Our staff also maintains compliance with first aid, CPR certification, and additional trainings to better support student health and wellbeing in the classroom.
-
The DIY Builders program offers an expansive portfolio of hands-on, project-based learning activities that students get to plan & personalize before taking their finished project home. Many of our new DIY projects that get developed are also developed as a direct response to student feedback and interests.
-
As more skilled trades workers retire from the workforce, practical life skills taught in the DIY Builders program such as learning how to use a hammer, screwdriver, measuring tape, and more will equip students with 21st-century skills to create more career pathway opportunities for them in the future. Each DIY project lesson plan has specific skill-building objectives that students will need to use and master to complete their projects.
-
Student feedback fuels our program development and innovation. We provide frequent opportunities for students in all grade levels to share their interests and feedback on how we can improve their experience in the DIY Builders program. Many of our newest DIY project kits were developed as a direct response to student feedback.
-
We actively recruit and commit to developing and retaining diverse staff from the local communities in which they will work with students to ensure our instructors create an inclusive environment for students in class.
-
We can't boast enough about our instructional staff. We aim to hire for role models and we invest the time and resources to help our instructors develop the necessary project expertise and classroom management skills to deliver the DIY Builders program safely and effectively. We have many staff members that are frequently specifically requested by site staff and students alike because of the positive relationships that they've taken the time to cultivate in their work.
-
Aside from the partnerships that we seek to develop and nurture with school administration, we also welcome partnerships and frequently seek to collaborate with other enrichment providers serving the same sites.
-
Our instructional staff engage in frequent self-assessments and peer assessments to help each other grow professionally. We also seek daily feedback from staff members to identify any key pain points or patterns in classroom or project challenges so that we can address them immediately. We are always eager for our administrative partners' feedback on how we can improve our service delivery, and frequently make adjustments or customizations to meet their needs.
