DIY Spin Top
Level: Beginner
Beginner projects can typically be completed with little tooling (if any). Assembly can be completed in 20 - 45 minutes, and we recommend 45 - 60 minutes for planning and personalization. This project is appropriate for students in grades 2 and above.
Objective: Construct a DIY Spin Top
Students will use basic carpentry skills to build their very own DIY Spin Top. Students will have an opportunity to get creative and detail their interests by decorating and either painting or drawing on their spin tops. After decoration, students can then practice spinning their tops and compete in activities to see whose top can spin the longest!
Instructors then have an opportunity to reinforce learnings by prompting questions such as:
What skills were required for you to assemble your spin top?
Why do you think the top spins when you pull the string?
Why was it important to sand the spindle while assembling the spin top?
