DIY Lap Desk
Level: Intermediate
Intermediate projects can typically be completed with 1-3 tools. Assembly can be completed in 45 - 75 minutes, and we recommend 90 - 120 minutes for planning and personalization. This project is appropriate for students in grades 3 and above.
Objective: Construct a DIY lap desk
Students will use basic carpentry skills to build their very own DIY lap desk. Students will have an opportunity to get creative and challenge their attention to detail. With the large canvas of the lap desk top piece, students can spend time researching and planning their design before being given paint or markers to complete decoration.
Instructors then have an opportunity to reinforce learnings by prompting questions such as:
What skills were required for you to assemble the lap desk?
What will you use your lap desk for, and where will you use it?
After all of those nails you hammered into the top piece, what advice would you give to someone else learning how to use a hammer?
How was this project different from or the same as other projects you have built?
