DIY Fencing Friends

Watch our DIY Fencing Friends instructional video online.

Level: Advanced

Advanced projects can typically be completed with 2-5 tools. Assembly can be completed in 60 - 90 minutes, and we recommend 60 - 90 minutes for planning and personalization. This project is appropriate for students in grades 4 and above.

Objective: Construct a DIY fencing friends game

Students will use basic carpentry skills to build their very own DIY fencing friends game. Students will have an opportunity to get creative and decorate their fencing friends game, helping them express their interests and personality. After assembly and decoration, students will also get to participate in 1-on-1 competition with an opponent to see who can defend their balloon head the longest.

Instructors then have an opportunity to reinforce learnings by prompting questions such as:

  • Does the size of your balloon make it easier or harder to pop? Why?

  • Have you ever used a zip tie before? What else might you use them for?

  • Why was it important not to overtighten the zip tie?

  • When did fencing become a sport?
